Wandin resident Bronwyn Koll was appointed that the area's Committed QLD fruit fly project manager, within a $6.7 million Queensland Government plan to attack the bug in Vic.
She will manage the execution of the Yarra Valley Fruit fly regional action program which was designed by business, state government and the local community.
The Yarra Valley is among the largest fruit producing regions in the country and has so far been fruit fly-free, however, the insect has affected the Goulburn Valley and Sunraysia regions in rural Vic.
Ms Koll's household was growing fruit at the Yarra Valley for four generations, so that is how she knows the local business and is enthusiastic about protecting it.
She explained education programs have been a significant focus.
Another key driver as part of this plan would be to create a Fruit fly trapping program as an early alert system.
The Region is blessed to be in a situation where they're aiming to stop fruit flies from infecting vineyards yarra valley wide rather than a circumstance where they're attempting to eradicate it in the area. This is dissimilar to in Goulburn Valley and Sunraysia areas that are making an effort to reduce amounts and handle the circumstance, attempts can rather go towards preserving a fruit fly free region.
